New Year, New You!

Autopilot is a setting our brains know well.

We are bombarded daily by ever-increasing amounts of stimulus; whilst running from one thing to the next.

Consequently, much of our time is spent dwelling on the past and planning out the future and not being in the present.

We look as if we are functioning perfectly and seem very efficient but we are actually anything but conscious. We are on autopilot, going through the motions.

At this time of year, parties, alcohol, food, more food and lots and lots of shopping fill the gap. What fun! It always feels great to connect with family and friends and indulge ourselves. Outside is damp and grey so the prospect of getting out to exercise or find something new in our lives is often exchanged for the lure of the screen and our home comforts. It dulls our senses and emotions temporarily so we can numb our reactions to the outside world.

We feel full but do we feel totally fulfilled? Occasionally the answer is yes but often the answer is ‘is this it?’.

I know for me after the excitement of the festive season is over, I need to shake myself up and find a way to switch off the standby mode I have been existing on.

The media all shout Detox! Exercise! Diet!

But often these regimes are overwhelming, time consuming and fall by the way side by February 1st.

We need something playful, not another thing on your ever growing to-do list.

Something that helps us step back from our busy lives to enjoy who we are.

I have devised a series of 40 experiments called The Great Wake Up! for Psychologies Magazine which we are launching in January 2016. A series of simple, easy and human activities that are designed to help you enjoy life that little bit more and break free from your habits.

The exercises are a small insight into my new book, Wake Up! which will will be published in January 2017.

The first video ‘Share The Love’ gives you an idea of what the experiments will be like. Some will work, some will not, but the ones that do may well be so beneficial to our lives that they become a part of who we are.

The Great Wake Up! launch is on January 6th at 7pm in London and I would love you to be part of that.
